Sega Saturn Games

Sega Saturn was a great console released by Sega Games in Japan in 1994 and later in North America and Europe in 1995. The Saturn is a 5th Gen 32-bit console that came after the 16-bit SEGA Genesis which was also known as MegaDrive in Japan and PAL territories.

However, the console was not as successful in Europe and North America as PlayStation and other popular consoles back then. There were many explanations for the limited success of Saturn consoles ranging from its complicated dual CPU and price to the lack of a Sonic Hedgehog game and the huge popularity of the Sony PlayStation.

One thing you cannot deny, nevertheless, is that the previous Sega console, Sega Genesis was quite popular in the 1980s and early 90s. Sega Saturn replaced the Genesis version and came with more advanced architecture. It was actually a 32-bit console that came with a dual CPU processor layout complete with 8 processors. The console used a Hitachi chip to run games and maintain powerful support for different games.

The console’s versions for the United States and Japan had a few design differences. The Japanese version came with white buttons and controllers while the U.S version featured a wholesome black design including controllers and everything else. However, both versions had similar processor and CPU specifications.

The Sega Saturn had a completely different feel and look from the PlayStation 1 console. It used a CD ROM to load games. Most users found the unit complicated and expensive which is one of the reasons why Saturn never saw much success in Europe and North America.

The company, Sega, claims that the failure of Saturn was because a new version of Sonic the Hedgehog was delayed many times. Keep in mind that at the same time, Nintendo 64 had just hit the market with better support and a more affordable price. There was no way Saturn could compete with the new Nintendo version. In the year 2000, Sega Saturn production came to an end just as the Sega Dreamcast was launched to the market.

Presently, the Sega Saturn console is a collector’s item but despite the challenges it faced back then, Sega Saturn still managed to sell more than 9 million units. It was not such a big failure but incomparable to the previous Sega Genesis version that sold over 30 million units. The console’s production was halted at a time when 2D games were no longer as popular as they had been in the 80s and early 90s.

However, with the renewed interest in 2D games today, more people are beginning to see the value of the retro game’s pixel art and low-resolution polygons. Saturn emulators that allow you to play the games you enjoyed on the console are now readily available for download from our website.
