BeebEm first came to life in 1994 – a great year for emulators. It was designed as a BBC Micro emulator. It has been through a series of upgrades overtime. It was far from perfect, but bugs slowly faded off throughout the numerous updates. The emulator is currently maintained by Mike Wyatt. BeebEm was originally designed for Unix systems. However, the Windows 98 (or newer) version is mostly responsible for its notoriety. It also runs on other systems, including Mac OS X or Pocket PC.
BeemEm is freeware – its source code is given away with the emulator. These days, it can emulate a few different hardware, such as BBC Micro, Integra B, Econet, AMX Mouse and 65C02. It is mostly used for its BBC Micro capabilities and can run most applications, include Exile and Elite. Firetrack is not to be overlooked either. The download is easily available over the Internet.
