Mednafen was originally released as Nintencer. It is available as a free program and brings in a few different emulation cores from third parties. Everything is wrapped together for extra compatibility with numerous systems. The name has been changed to Mednagen, which stands for My Emulator Doesn't Need A Frickin' Excellent Name. The emulator is written in C++ and runs on multiple systems – PlayStation 3, Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, BSD, Wii or RISC. It brings in a plethora of classic and vintage games and it aims to recreate them in the smallest details – with an accent of extra speed.
The emulator is relatively new on the market when compared to other similar programs. New versions are released quite rarely though. The last one came out in the spring of 2020, so some critics are worried that the team behind Mednafen might have abandoned the project – only time will tell.
