Stella emulates the classic Atari 2600 game console and brings in access to games like Space Invaders, River Raid, Missile Command or Jungle Hunt – no games or ROM images are included with the package though, as they are copyrighted. The emulator is an open source program and runs on various operating systems, including Linux, Mac OS X and Windows, among others. The project came to life in 1996 – known as Stella 96 back then. It has been through multiple updates and it is still being maintained. New updates and releases pop up on a regular basis – one of the last Atari 2600 emulators to still keep up with the trends.
Written in C++, Stella supports pretty much every Atari 2600 title with a high accuracy – support for SECAM, PAL and NTSC. Besides, it is compatible with most Atari 2600 peripheral device, from joysticks to paddle controllers.
