ZNSES is a Super Nintendo Entertainment System emulator. It is generally written in x86 assembly. It comes with ports for Windows, DOS and Linux, but it also has unofficial ports for macOS and Xbox. The first version came to life in the fall of 1997. The last version – 1.51 – came out in 2007. With no further updates and releases, the project has probably been abandoned – yet it is widely used and still compatible with modern operating systems. Overtime, it has been challenged by other emulators with greater speeds – while not the fastest out there, ZNSES has decent speeds and an exquisite accuracy. Given its popularity, it has been translated in a few other languages too – voluntary work.
ZNSES is available for free. Older versions are still available over the Internet, but they feature some nasty bugs – one of them giving away control of the host system. Stick to the latest one to be safe.
