The PlayStation 3 consists of a video game console that is created and sold by Sony. This console is the successor of PS2 or PlayStation 2. It was released on 11th November of 2006 back in Japan. From there, it got released in places like North America, Australia, and Europe. The PS3 is the first-ever console to utilize Blu-Ray Disc as its main storage medium. This console was the first from its series to incorporate services of social gaming, and that includes the PS Network.
The PS3 is also the first console that supported a wireless controller. It does so via its remote type of connectivity with PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Portable. A slim version of the PS3 was released back on 9th September 2009. It is lighter than the actual original version and also comes with a marketing design and redesigned logo. There is also a slight start-up type of change in its software. The PS3 doesn’t possess the hardware ability for running PS2 games.
However, in 2012, another super slim version was released, where the console was refined and redesigned. The console garnered mixed reviews when it first came out because of its expensive price tag. The 60GB and 20GB models were retailing for $599 and $499, respectively. Its processor’s architecture was complex, but the console’s untapped potential and Blu-ray features received praises. It started gaining more positive reception as time passed.
Its slow start in sales improved after the introduction of the slim version. After the release of the PlayStation 4 in 2013, the production of PS3 in New Zealand stopped by 29th September 2015. But its production was still continuing in other parts of the world. The shipments to Australia and Europe came to a close around March of 2016. Its production in North America also came to a close in October of 2016. Lastly, Japan was the last country to ban its production on 29th May 2017.
PS3 sold about 81,639 systems in its first 24 hours during its release in Japan. In its first two days of release, the console sold around 600,000 units in regions such as Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Africa, and the Middle East. It is undoubtedly one of the best-selling consoles in recent times. PS3 is popular in the gaming community because of its wide set of games and wireless controllers.
